grass vs. cement
I have lately come across a new style in yards…having no yard at all! I’ve noticed that people have been starting to become satisfied with a concrete slab instead of a grassy knoll…or a massive deck with limited greenery. I’m not sure how I feel about this new development. I never thought yards would phase out. I have a friend who recently moved and told me that one of the things they were most excited about was the concrete slab in the back and no real grassy yard. This caught me off guard. I would have considered that a negative in the argument, but a positive ? Has America gone anti-green space as everything turns more ugly practicial ? What happened to people growing and developing lavish yards and gardens…and outdoor entertainment, and most importantly, what are they going to start calling yard sales? It can not very well remain the same when yards start to lessen ! I have also heard of a few people acquiring turf instead of grass. I can understand the argument on this end a slight bit more because while it is lower maintenance, it is still green and soft. What happened to the days of rolling down hills or tossing the ball around in the yard? Or swingsets and tree houses for that matter? Are they slipping away..out of style, out of date? certainly not. In my opinion, there is something energizing about that fresh cut grass smell on a summer evening and the way it feels between your toes on a cool day…and not to mention the limited skin damage if you slip and fall on it! Am I the only one mourning this loss? A loss of a piece of childhood…
